Sinovation, our corporate incubation programme, is integral to fostering innovation among colleagues, encouraging innovative ideas for efficiency and quality improvements that can benefit our operations and the wider community. The third edition, focusing on energy saving, received more than 40 entries from colleagues proposing ways to enhance energy efficiency in our day-to-day operations. Five teams were shortlisted, and had the opportunity to present their ideas to management at the final presentation session.
Sandy Yuen and Max Yim from Grand Regentville use a water-cooled jacket with motors to reduce heat loss from the filtration system of the swimming pool, recycling the thermal energy to heat water for hot tubs. The solution can help building managers to better utilise heat and minimise energy waste from swimming facilities.
Kenneth Lo, Lewis Cheung, Matthew Ho, Raymond Tong and Steve Tsang from tmtplaza delved into smart lighting systems, designing car park LED lights that automatically dim when daylight is detected and light up when motion is detected. By optimising the illumination levels in car parks, the solution is expected to reduce energy consumption by up to 80%.
Another winning solution that recycles kinetic energy has been suggested by Mandy Chiu, Im Kwok-fong and Jonathan Cheung from Park Metropolitan. Their idea is to create a water turbine that makes use of the high volume of water discharged from water tanks or swimming pools to generate hydropower to support gadget charging services.
